That makes us happy because we want ourselves and other people to think that we have "class," which is what rip-off coffee sometimes stands for. A cup here done at home would cost less than or equal to twenty-five cents when you convert it to US dollars.

Most of the coffee joints these days model themselves to one marketing plan. That is to sell consumers a "lifestyle".
It is no longer just about a cup of joe, but a place to meet friends, hangout and recognizing a certain brand & taste among your group. Thus, the cup of coffee cost way beyond just the coffee itself.

I gave up on coffee because it is bad for one's health. Though moderate caffeine intake isn't likely to cause harm, too much can noticeably affect your health. Heavy daily caffeine use — about four to seven cups of coffee — can cause:
Restlessness
Anxiety
Irritability
Muscle tremors
Sleeplessness
Headaches
Nausea, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems
Abnormal heart rhythms

Because as American we do not know the meaning of "enough is enough and I'm not going to take it any more".
But hey, Water is free and better for you and when I do get that coffee Monkey on my back I pull out the air tight jar of coffee, and the can of whip cream and make it myself. So its free too.

A Venti Sumatra at Starbucks costs $2.10. Ibuy the ground by the bag and brew my own mostly, but an occasional splurge is ok.

same reason you buy a $14 ribeye. same reason you pay for a 4 star hotel. you want quality not quantity. Plus, you can get a latte, mocha, etc that a regular home coffee maker cannot make.

Because we're usually not awake when we buy it... they could say $20 and I wouldn't know the difference... After I wake up I usually think... not again! It's free at work!
