my house mate is traveling to india for some volunteer work and she is unsure what the weather will be like durning that time of year..
what type of clothes are appropiate for her to wear

What area will she be in? I can't really help much until I know what area... North? South? East? West?.... (it's like asking what the weather is like in America during that time.... You'd get a totally different answer from someone in New York where it might snow at that time... than Florida where you might be swiming in your pool in your backyard)...
In Delhi, Dec- Feb is PERFECT weather. It would feel chilly and can be 40F at night, but feels GREAT during the day! It starts heating up in March and can be pretty hot, but still feels good. Further north it can be REALLY cold... and down south, some places stay the same all year... if you edit your question it would be easier to help answer you.
About what type of clothes too would be dependent on the area - not just because of weather, but because of culture in that area... India is a VERY diverse country....

Its winters in India from Dec to March. Your mate need to bring Sweaters, jackets, woollen socks, cap & thermal inner wear. It also depends in which country she is residing, like people from canada don't feel very cold in India, because there summers are like winter of India.
Further you should mention which part of India your housemate is travelling. In North India (New Delhi) its very cold. But in South & western India its not that cold during these months. Further you can refer to this website to know the exact weather.

It depends uppon which part of India your friend will be visiting. While it will be cold in northern part of India during
December and January, climate in March will be slightly hot in some areas.,

well in northern india it might be cold. it may not be. but usually it is. in march it should be between cool and hot. i luv going to india! where is friend traveling to?
