It is in Ebay's fine print that if they have system problems or downs, they can extend an auction out a few hours to accommodate that time to ensure the item was up for auction for the full time it should have been under contract.

Did the auction have a reserve price ?

If so, then your bid didn't meet the min reserve price.

So they are allowed to continue the auction.

A reserve price means the seller, set a minimum price that they would accept. They have to tell e-bay that price, but bidders cannot see it.

If no bid meets the minimum price, then they either extend the auction or remove the item from the auction.

But they do not have to sell the item, if the highest bid, did not meet the minimum reserve price.
