Sometimes as war veterans get older memories of what they endured during the war years come back. It happened with my dad who was in Burma, once he retired he started to get nightmares and it helped him to talk about it. Try to be more understanding with your Uncle he posssibly is going through the same thing. If it gets too deep then try to subtly change the subject. Talk about things he is interested in. It can be hard sometimes to hear a loved one go on about things that are not very nice, just remember you are only listening to it, he lived through it. I hope things go ok. Bless you both

Ask him to change the subject. Mind you he'll probably want to talk about the 1939-45 conflict with Germany instead. If you want to really shut him up ask him the difference between gravy and coffee!

look honey it was important to him, it was one of the greatest things that happen in his life. in a way its his way of dealing with it by talking about it. watch band of brothers and see what it was like for him. in alot of ways he's still there and not with you, i know vietnam vets who can't walk in chinatown in NYC because they start freaking out. something like being in a war mess's up a person.
