If '007 James Bond' is his alias, he got promoted to this status. BUT What happened to the previous Bond's? We never hear if they died or resigned or whatever. Surely 1 of the Bond's must have asked about his predessesor?
Can anyone answer this?

Then I'm just curious as to how he can still be in his early forties after so many missions.

His name is James Bond and he is a 007. If you watch the newest Bond flick (Casino Royale) he says fairly early in the movie (when he has broken into Money Penny's apartment) that 007's never live very long. I think 007 is the kind of agent he is and James Bond is his name (though im sure it's not his real name)

There's only one character named James Bond. He just happens to have been portrayed by several different actors in the film franchise. For the real Bond go and read the original books by Ian Fleming in chronological order and you will see how the character develops. The books are a lot more realistic and gritty than the films which tend to go in for modern gadgets and effects. It's useful to remember that the early books were set in the 1950s whereas the films were set in the era in which they were made.

Only one person named "James Bond", portrayed by several actors.
By "the last 007" he means "the person who had that designation before me". 00 agents probably don't live very long--it's dangerous work. There have been 4 00 agents killed during the various movies: Octopussy, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, and Casino Royale. I don't think I missed any.

There is only one James Bond and that is his name. He was promoted from the navy when he reached the rank of Commander. The films and books depict an individual mission. Its just the actor who changes.

He is agent 007. There was indeed 001, 002, etc. Is it at the beginning of the latest Casino Royale that we hear 006 has been killed? He's not the 7th incarnation, he is number 7.

well they are irrelevent after they've passed. i would like to see a Bond movie where they join up with on of the old ones. that would be great.
also if you watch Casino Royal (Peter Sellers one) there is a Bond who is retired and has to come out of retirement. Its a tongue in cheek version of the Bond series, dont istake it for the 2007 version of course.

i always thought that james bond was his real name, i know that 007 is his agent number which is his lisence to kill and that there are other 00 agents, sean bean was 006 in goldeneye, and im guessing other 007 agents are never revealed to keep there identity top secret
