The skeptics would demand he perform tricks for the Amazing Randi and refuse to accept the findings of the whatever US Government or university scientist(s) discovered him/her and experimentally verified his ability.
His/her performance would be explained away by chance, fraud, bad statistics, or poor experimental control despite no evidence of any of these flaws.
As has happened numerous times already in the established science of parapsychology.
Of course that's just what I think (which is what you asked) and I claim no special ability to tell the future.
NOTE: A test for pure telepathy is not feasible (maybe not even possible) because in order to confirm the results the information has to be recorded somewhere. This avoids the possiblity of a person thinking of an apple, another person saying apple, and the person thinking saying no I was thinking about a 66 Mustang. If the information is recorded somewhere then clairvoyance (not telepathy) could be responsible.

He or she would dissapear quickly. The government would take them and then black out all news regarding them. Down play anything that was thrown at government and then let the tests begin.
Some people have very closed minds about things we do not understand. I gave a few links just to make a point of sorts. If toy companies are making toys for us as general public to play with, imagine what the government has. Move things with your mind ok its on a computer but still its run from nothing but thought. Dont you think there could be a chance there maybe some out there in this world that are better then others and might not need the sensors? Not saying they can pick up cars and throw them.
The links are a fast search getting late for work there are much better ones out there. Wish could have found teh one the government has on training thier jet pilots to fly by mind and not joy stick that was a interesting article.
So yes I think the government would take the person. More then likely treat them very well, but they would most likely never be free again. Just for being able to do something in the links below with out needing the sensors. Not much just not needing sensors on the head.

Such a kid would usually never be discovered. If he was he would quickly be forgotten, and people will deny the existence of his ability as it is the last thing on their minds of the existence of this power. It is hard to prove, other than by agreement. Even if there was agreement , there is always self doubt.
Also since he would project thoughts to people, the only thing that would happen is that people will think that he is speaking a lot of common sense since most people cannot really identify their own thoughts.Depending on his surrounding and situation, people are most likely to ignore his presence.
Other than being able to convince some people of some his views. His life would be also very normal.
The only people who know of such people are those intense meditants. However, since society usually doesnt understand them, and since we live in a skeptical society; and they are not going to be bothered when they point him out. Even a press release of his abilities would be considered a one time fluke.
It is unlikely that the US government would even bother since it makes well educated officers look like idiots trying to affirm his abilitiy. Beareaucrats are also self serving beings, interested in pensions ,promotions and payrises and not all would risk their jobs for the sake of the truth.
Sadly, it is possible there are lots of people like that. But who would really bother about them or point out their existence? I hope it is not you, since I believe the burden would be hard to bear - an open secret that would not be shared.

With great luck that person would keep quiet about it and keep reading or listening in to others until finding another telepath. They would enjoy life together and do great things. Hopefully good things. Could be a quiet society of telepaths currently up and running.
Alas I am not one of them. My wife tells me out loud everything I do not want to hear

he would probably take over the world. I think that from a biblical view point that someone will have telepathic powers so strong as to have telepathic control.
and his number is 666. thats right the Antichrist (dramatic music)

It's never happened yet, as far as we know. I guess it depends a little bit on who discovers him first. If some nefarious organization found him first, they might kidnap him and use him for their own evil deeds. Blast those evildoers!
On the other hand, if a university researcher discovered him first, he'd be in all the news and become an instant celebrity and quite likely very wealthy in a short period of time.

First he/she would need to be able to perform under controlled conditions, to eliminate him/her from just another hoax. Then it would open up new branches of legit scientific study. We would have to know how and why it works. The kid would probably be famous, unless the gov't really does keep stuff like this secret, in which case, we would never know about it.

"...a local group of college students have been spreading rumors that one of their classmates has psychic powers... this has now been confirmed to be a hoax and this student will be removed for the semester..." just one way it could go. soon enough this will be a form of terrorism lol. its not like these things have never been around. these people end up in mental hospitals sometimes, believe it.

He'd win a million bucks from this guy http://www.randi.org , win a million bucks from the Nobel Prize committee for opening up a new field of science, and finally validate all those people who have been claiming the paranormal exists. However, since no one has ever done that, we'll just have to go along assuming it doesn't.

I believe there are cases of telepathy that are incontrovertible. Just because the majority don't understand doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The truth is the truth even if no one believes it
