No. I do not believe in charity. I believe in training people to acheive their own goals.

If I had the means, meaning I could maintain my household, keep food on the table, and clothing on our backs--basically lead the life we live right now, but we suddenly had a huge influx of money, I would probably give more than 50% of it away. And I wouldn't do it for tax breaks, or so that people could look and say, "Oh, look at how generous they are!" I would simply do it because there are people in this world who need help, and who aren't getting enough of it. When people ask me what my wildest dream is, I always say the same thing: to be the world's most generous unknown philanthropist.

People give away money for much the same reason they buy real estate, because there are tax advantages, and because they get their name known. They just don't give their money away.
But you're stating 50%...1) as they say, don't give money away that you need for yourself (so it's up to you to decide since everyone, even the wealthy, suffers losses, no investment is a sure thing, and 2) the rich don't invest outright, instead they borrow against what money they have (like borrowing against their own money, borrowing against a savings account). and 3) there better be some kind of contract involved to protect yourself, even in a marriage contract if you are truly wealthy. (a lot of people make their money by suing other people, so you best protect yourself in all directions).

I would have to be either independently wealthy or win the lottery...but I wouldn't give 50%. Between the two of us we have 10 kids and 19 grandkids to provide for. I would however give a big chunk to the Salvation Army. They helped me in the past when I was a single mom and down on my luck.

If I gave 50% I would end up either in debt or even homeless which to me is not a worthy cause.

Without a doubt, YES... (not just money)... When my Dad was old and ailing, I gave up my career to take care of him... It was the best thing that could have ever happened to me...
