There are only two types of leeches. One is called cattle leach or medicinal leech that is found in pond water. It is scientifically called Hirudinaria or Poecillobdella or Hirudo.
The second one is terrestrial leech found in forests. It is called Haemadipsa. It leaps at you and may enter the mouth. Generally while walking through the forest it holds on to the socks and sucks the blood.

Actually, there are about 500 described species of leech. How common the individual species are depends on what area you are in.
Most live in freshwater environments, but there are some marine species, and some live up on land.
All leeches are carnivorous - feeding on insects, other worms, snails, or are parasites on fish. Only a very few species are actually "blood-suckers", feeding on the blood of vertebrates.
However, most of the ones that humans ever see are the blood-sucking ones, because we don't really care about little wormy things in the water that don't interact with us.
