There's some debate as to how many countries are in the world. Europe contains some dodgy ones like Vatican City and San Marino, which are sometimes counted, sometimes not. Also, countries torn apart by internal conflicts are another problem: sometimes, a province will declare independence which is then not recognized by the parent state (look at Yugoslavia in the 90's). So whether a region is counted as a country is then dependent on your definition of a country. Is a country a country when its inhabitants claim it is, or when it is recognized as a country by other countries?
If you need this for a school project or something, first decide on your definition of a country. E.g. you can decide to include only countries that are part of the UN.
Good luck!

Technically, there are 194 countries in the world, but, only 192 are recognized by the UN.
