can i download software to improve my graphics instead of buying a graphics card?

You could use 3rd party drivers(just make sure its reputable) or if its a nvidia card downgrade the nvidia force ware as the fastest drivers for a generation of a graphics card are released back when they were truly supported this is extremely true for the geforce4 mx as older drivers had software emulation for the hardware it was lacking.you could also change the although software can only go so far it isn't gonna feel like having a new graphics card.you could also overclock the graphics card and using Rivatuner (search it) disable shaders in newer games too allow the graphics card to actually play them.

Graphics performance depends entirely on your hardware. As long as you are using the latest driver, there is no software that can improve performance.

Software can affect it to some extent, such as how well a game is programmed.

Sorry, but 3D graphics acceleration is a lot dependent on hardware (GPU, CPU, videoram). For people who are tight on cash, the next best thing is overclocking. YES, overclocking the processor, the GPU and videoram. 20-25% performance gain is usually easy, without spending anything. Higher gain is possible but then you start spending on better coolers.
