Hafner is terrible defensively.
Ortiz is also not very good, but the main reason he became a DH was because the Red Sox wanted to make sure he didn't get injured playing defense. He was quite injury prone in Minnesota.

Probably because they are injury prone and aren't the greatest in the field.
I can't speak so much for Hafner, but after watching Ortiz play with the Twins, he was always injured, and wasn't the greatest defensively at first base. The reason the Twins released him was because he couldn't stay healthy.

They are both great hitters and need to be the ineup someway. They dont play in the field because first they are in the American League with the DH rule and there are better defensive players on the team then them

I don't know about Hafner, but Papi is a terrible first baseman. He only plays first in interleague games at the national league park where there is no DH.

Have you seen either of them play? They are very poor defensive players, who can obviously hit a lot better than they can field.

Big Papi is not that bad at first. I saw him play a creditable first base in an interleague game and we all hopefully will see him play first base during the World Series.

Because they are DH's & the DH on the team just hits. Not fields.

Because they are huge men with less agility than their respective firstbasemen team mates.
