I wanted to buy another guage cluster for my 94 civic ex (with a manual trans) and wanted to know if I could buy one that said 140. Would it still work the same or would I have to make any modifications?

the speedometer on the 94 civic works off of the electronic pulses from the vehicle speed sensor that reports the speed of the output shaft of the transmission. The circuit is the same for manual and automatic transmission vehicles as the sensor output is not dependent on the transmission gearing and the matching speedometer drive gear as a cable driven speedometer is.

basically the speedometer gauge assembly uses the frequency of the On-Off pulses from the Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS to calculate the vehicle speed in either miles per hour or kilometers per hour based on the gauge assembly. so, fas a simple no-basis-in-fact example, if the gauge assembly sees 500 on-off pulses per minute from the VSS it 'knows' that the vehicle speed is 60 mph and moves the needle to that mark. if it counts 400 pulses per minute it calculates that the vehicle is moving at 45 mph and so on. That algorythem is going to be the same for all civic speedometers.

If the gauge you want to install is used on another Honda civic model, it should be okay. If it is an aftermarket gauge that is sold as a replacement for a Honda gauge it should be calibrated by the manufacturer of the gauge to work and it should be fine. If you're just buying a speedometer that doesn't say it will work on a Honda then you're better off not buying it.

hope that answers your question
