Birds while flying do not make contact with the earth which is at a positive potential with respect to the cloud base which is at a negative potential. So they do not form an electrical path for the charges to travel from the cloud to the earth or vice versa. However if they are caught in the lightning path between the cloud and the earth ,they will be burnt. But this is also very rare as they can sense the storm formation and go away from it in advance.

Most animals can sense storm activity like lightning strikes. Cows for example huddle together away from the path of the storm and move accordingly. Unless it is retarded, birds can tell when it is not safe to fly and don't.

They have the insulation from the feather as it traps air.
So electric charges are harder to get through air, and won't get hit by lightnings.

Why? Do you want them to get hit, and end up on your yard or porch. But then you would have to pick it up to throw it to the garbage.

Or in other words, they're not touching the ground.
So there's nothing to attract the electricity.
