If you think a hotel reservation system is a small system you are far away from reallity... Well, I guess for academical purposes you don't need to deal with all the rules and the differences between hotels.

Avoid dynamic inventory systems. One inventory unit in a hotel is one specific room for every day for at least one year in advance. Only that detail makes it a bit tricky, then you have to deal with seasons, with additional guests (2 adults + 1 child) is a Double or a Triple room? How many beds? I am just telling you the peak of the iceberg.

You can make a car dealer system. (Brands, models, year, specs) there is a lot to play with there.

Run some form of software on computers in a community. they could communicate with one yet another by employing way of TCP/IP. Then, each and each pc could take part in fixing a piece of a extra complicated subject.

What level are you? How much experience have you had with programming? How much time do you have? What are requirements for the project? Etc.. etc..

Then I might be able to give you a decent suggestion.

Or a booking system for a houseboat company. They own 7 houseboats and people book them out for various numbers of days.
