thanks people, i know the background of my rescue dog,(scooby!) and the only reason he is there is because the owner was out the house for 14hrs a day and it wasnt fair on him. he's clearly been looked after as we've spent time with him before agreeing to take him, he's really gentle with my kids. she's just stubborn and wont have it. she's refused to come to my house while i have him. so thats my house mother free for ten yrs. she wont put me off, i've done my research, kennel club and other websites and i'm more than happy with my choice.

There are 3 countries that recognize the clear difference between the SBT and APBT..... England and all of the UK, Australia and New Zeland and therefore Staffordshire Bull Terriers are not classed as a Pit Bull 'Type' (what ever that is) and are exempt from BSL laws. In America SBT's are classifed as a Pit Bull 'Type' (but so are most breeds and a muscular build in the US). The law is different in the UK than it is in the US but if you have a badly bred Staffie or Staffie cross then it could be classed as an illegal 'Type'. American "Staffordshire" Terriers are Pit Bull 'Types' and are banned in the UK. True Staffies are never going to be banned the Government can't handle the breeds on the DDA banned list now they would crumble if they added even one more to the list.

I've not heard of this and given the number of Staffys in the UK I very much doubt it's true.

Incidentally we bought our first Staffy X pup from rescue almost 3 years ago. Not sure what he's crossed with but everyone asks if he's a pitbull. My parents thought we were stupid to get him given that my daughter was 6 at the time. He has turned out to be the best pet anyone could wish for. Highly intellegent, loving, extremely obedient, playful and no problems with kids, or other animals (apart from being beaten up by cats!). He's soft as putty, I love him to bits and couldn't imagine being without him. My family now think he's fabulous too. If you exercise and train him/her properly and show lots of love I'm sure you'll get along fine. Besides, if you and the dog weren't right for each other I doubt the rescue home would let you adopt.
I hope your dog proves your family wrong and that you are very happy together. Good luck

Just read the Dublin thing. Dublin council are banning them from local authority housing...not from Dublin in general (still drastic though)

Staffies are wonderful dogs. I have heard of Pitbulls being banned but never Staffies. I think that American Staffies have been used as fighting dogs but only because they have been trained to fight from an early age. They are very strong dogs but they are naturally very gentle, even in play. My Staffy can bite through a thick rope in minutes but she has never been in the slightest way aggressive to me or any other person. She is a big softie who only wants to be loved. I'm not even sure she'd be a great watchdog. She would probably be more likely to lick an intruder and ask for a belly rub than frighten them away.
Do find out some more about your dog's background though. Any breed of dog can become aggressive if it has been provoked and harrassed enough.

i have not heard anything about the ban on Staffy dogs myself,

But to be quite honest it is the owners that train these dogs to be evil,

I have had a staffy for nearly 7 years now and she is the most timid dog you could wish to meet.
She has been brilliant with my kids not once has she growled at them or anything else, And when my 3 youngest were babys she would not go any where near them. And you know what toddlers are like for pulling animals about she would just get up and move away. i have ne fears of leaving her alone in the the room with the kids.
Infact if my children are playing in the garden she will stay out there with them the whole time, She follows them around all the time.

Im not saying she would not ever attack anyone because im quite sure if anyone ever attacked one of the kids in front of her she would most certainly protect them, But that is what she is there for.

So to be honest if you have your heart set on getting a staffy then go for it, If you bring it up right you wont have no worries.
Not all dogs are evil.......... Its just their owners

My sister has a staffie and he is the best dog ever. They are really smart dogs and so loving and friendly. She has 3 boys and when they were young they would play with him and not matter what they did he never snarled or went for them. He knows that when a kid is walking him not to pull or tug but when an adult is walking him he wants to run and play. He never goes for other dogs. 1 time another dog went crazy when he went past and my sisters dog just stood there and watched him. They rarely malt and I have never heard 1 bark. 1 thing they do is chew everything so make sure you get some strong rope or other chewable things. They are the best dogs in the world to have and I would recommend them to anyone. I know a few people who have 1 and none of them have ever had a problem. I'm sure your mum would fall in love with it when she met it. Everyone I know does when they meet a staffie.

I have a few friends who own a Staffy, and they are really nice natured dogs, they are good with children too (very protective).
Do not listen to anyone who says bad things about Staffy's they are lovely dogs, I was going to get one, if I hadn't got a Boxer first!
The only thing is, be careful when getting a rescue dog, as some centres don't know what kind of life they have had before!

to be perfectly honest any dog can turn on you though staffies have a bad press at the moment as they were bred for fighting and hunting though , 20 years ago it was rottwieller and dobermann before that and german shepherds before that , if you are looking after a rescued staffy then you should realise it may and i say may have behaviour problems caused by it's previous owners but i know alot of staffy owners and they are a loyal brave and very affectionate like most dogs but as for banning staffy i doubt it as the kennel club would have to say something about it as well the staffordshire bull terrier breeders in this country may have something to say about it though cross breeding of american pit bulls with staffy dogs may be frowned upon but not illegal!
look after your staffy and you will get a lot of love back!

Hi, yes I saw it on the news this morning. It's only in Northern Island and only applies to council tenants. The Council are telling all their tenants to get rid of dogs classed as dangerous or get out. So, if you live under a private landlord or owned house you're ok. I know why they are doing it but it's unfair to responsible dog owners.

I dont stay in the UK, but must be honest, I doubt that there is any truth in this.... What do you suppose they're gonna do with the Staffies there allready? Kill them? Shoot them? Or maybe house them...? Come on...

Dont worry, I'm sure you'll find it's an untrue rumour!
