Dragon Ball started in 1986 and Dragon Ball Z started in 1989, but Dragon Ball Z was shown on TV in the states before Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball Z: Vintage in Japan from 1989-04-19 to 1996-01-31. Vintage in America from 1996-09-13.
Dragon Ball: Vintage in Japan from 1986-02-26 to 1989-04-12. Vintage in America from 2001-08-20 to 2003-12-01.
So Dragonball was first in Japan, while DBZ was aired first in the U.S.

Of course it came out before DBZ. DBZ is the sequel to DB. DB introduces you to the main character, Gokou, and all of his friends. DBZ continues where DB left off, and Dragonball GT continues where DBZ left off. Understand? In otherwords, if you want to get the whole story in order, start with Dragonball, then Dragonball Z, then Dragonball GT. All three are awesome shows, and I'm a huge fan!

In Japan it did, but it's debatable in the U.S. Funimation put out DBZ first, but before they did it, Harmony Gold put out a translation of DB where they gave all the characters weird names (Goku was Zero, for example). The odd thing is, Harmony Gold only translated some of the episodes, as DB didn't catch on with American fans nearly as well as DBZ. So, episodes of DB showed first in the U.S., but DBZ was the first to appear to a mainstream audience in the format accepted today.

DBZ is a sequel of DB, but it won't matter anything if u just skip off DB & watch only DBZ.
DBZ is better than DB, that's confirmed, & DBZ is easily available anywhere.
