There is a set of lists that are rotated through over a period of years. When an really nasty storm occurs, the name is retired. It is maintained by a committee.
esearch 'hurricane names' and several sites will tell you the story and the names for various years and various parts of the world.

The World Meteorological Organization uses six lists in rotation. The same lists are reused every six years. The only time a new name is added is if a hurricane is very deadly or costly. Then the name is retired and a new name is chosen.

I don't know who actually picks the names but I do know that they go in an alphabetical sequence and it alternates between a boys name and a girls name.

This is only recent though. Histsorically all hurricanes were named after girls! About 15 years ago (very roughly!) they started using boys names too. Perhaps it was under pressure from equalities campaigners?!

Somtimes it seems that there is no alphabetical sequence when we hear about the cyclones/hurricanes on the news. This is because there are many of them are never reported. It is usually only the ones that threaten human safety or are very severe that we hear of.

Hope this helps?!

The names proceed in alphabetical order and alternate between male and female.
The list of names is decided in advance, as some people have already mentioned and listed. When another hurricane forms they just take the next name from the list

It would be nice to believe that they're all individually named, and that some meterologist got to name Hurricane Katrina after his ex-wife or something, but in reality it's a much more clinical method.

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The original name lists featured only women's names. In 1979, men's names were introduced and they alternate with the women's names. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2006 list will be used again in 2012.

the first person to have documented, that a hurricane, was reappearing, as it was the same size, same strength, it appeared in the same place and travelled along the same path, it appeared at the same time of year.

"A compact storm, it continued westward while steadily intensifying, reaching hurricane strength on the 26th. A Brazilian newspaper indicated a "Furacão (hurricane) threatening Santa Catarina (the Brazilian state)." Partly because of this headline, the storm was unofficially named Catarina. It continued to encounter favorable conditions and reached a peak of 100 mph" wiki

I watched a TV program on this last week....a guy who worked for a US weather centre (it didnt say the name) had the job of choosing names for Hurricanes. He said you have to name them judging by the size, speed etc. He said he got the sack for naming a hurricane something really stupid!

The names of hurricanes are in alphabetical order, and alternating Boy then Girl etc....

So,
If a hurricane struck now (as far as i know) the name would be "L" and male, so maybe
Hurricane Larry,
then Hurricane Martha etc....

when it gets to Z, they go in alphabetical order again, but swap the position of boy and girl around.

Hope it helps!
Tom
