My theory is that LGBT people weren't able to be with their partners in an open room or place so they had to hide in the closet when making out or whatnot.
I'm probably wrong, though.

Because coming out of the closet sounds more original than coming out from under the bed.

Hmmmm.... possibly because when you hide something in a closet, it is completely concealed from everything outside, but if you hide it under a bed, then you risk someone stumbling upon it and finding it..... but if you lock it in a closet, no one will find it unless you either tell them, or bring it out...... so when someone is still "closeted", then they arent ready to share their secret with everyone yet.....

Ever hear the saying, "Skeletons in the closet" ?
It means, you hide what you don't want others to know, in a space where they won't usually look.
So, coming out of the closet means, removing the skeletons, that which you are ashamed of/embarrassed of.

You can do things in a closet that there isn't room for under a bed.
