Edit:
Yes people..the problem is, if you have too many contacts and friends, you just don't notice certain questions of some contacts who post more interesting questions than others...and you like find only 3 "starred" questions from the same user and miss the parties..

I guess we have to do it "manually"!

I don't star many questions. But I do try and make a point of starring a question that I think is interesting and may be something that a number of people are wondering about but have never ask.
I actually don't think the star system has much relevance and I have wondered why it was initiated at all.
Its only value if you can call it that is to make you contacts aware of the question. I don't necessarily answer the questions just because my contacts have done so.
But I do check out their answers for interest sake.

No equivalent points, I don't think so. But if, for example, I star this question, all the people in my contact list will see this and if it interests them, they might answer your question, too. So basically, it gives your question more exposure to other users especially if some of my contacts are not from Egypt section. And you, as the user that asked this question, will know that it's liked by many depending on the number of stars you get.

I agree with most of the answers it is logical to do this if you find a question intersting & feel your friends/contacts will feel the same. I view lots more questions for this reason otherwise i may not get the chance to.

You star a question to get your contacts to notice it. When someone in your list stars a question, you can see it easily when you view your profile. Hence, the chances are the question that you like is going to get more replies from your friends.

If u star a best answer, they receive points...
I star some questions if I like them and want others to read them so people in my network will have the chance to read them

Edit:
Ok, if u thumb up (not star) a best answer they get points.. thanks Rana :)

I would star a question if it has hit in my head a question I wanted to ask but didnt know I wanted to ask it - if you understand that.

for two reasons:
I really liked this question.
I really got frustrated from this question & wanted my contact list to read it & know their opinions about it.
