I'm on my second load of baby clothes in the washing machine, and washed first load twice with hot water and baby detergent also fabric softener. The clothes I bought from a smoking household and did not give it much thought at the time and they were cheap. Will washing twice in hot water be enough to rid the clothes of the smoke smell?
Is there any better way to do this? Thanks.

hi marie -- here's a simple, old fashioned trick.... if it's a full load - add a cup of white vinager to the wash cycle and then about a half cup to the rinse. works like a dream and it's an all natural dinenfectant and softner and no they won't taste like a tossed salad. the other way - wash then and then hang them outside in the sunshine to dry the sun is also a natural cleaning agent but be careful as it's also a natural form of bleach~hang colors out too long and they WILL fade.

i just bought a ton of really cheap kids clothing from a smoking home too! man it's the pits smelling that funk!!
8 loads of clothing to wash!!
i washed them all in cold water with regular detergent and my handy downy ball
they came out nicely.
i did dry them outside after a quick 15 min tumble in the drier to get the majority of the wetness out and to give a nice scent from my drier sheets.

i only had to wash the jackets twice bcse of the fiber fill i think.

the shoes i got were another story, they are difficult to unsmoke- i used febreeze on them and left them outside for a few days. that got it out finally

A good wash and air dry should do the trick, you could also try steaming the clothes. I love steam it kills all bacteria and rids almost everything of arb smells.

Wash in Dreft and hang them outside to dry...little more work than normal, but works wonders.
