The incus, malleus, and stapes are the bones of the middle ear. They are the smallest bones in the human body. The three bones are connect by hinges and are levers that carry the vibrations collected from the eardrum to the inner ear. The mechanical advantage gained in this system increases the volume of the sound 5 decibles, or about 7 times. "Normally the stapes, the smallest bone in the body, vibrates freely to allow the transmission of sound into the inner ear. When it becomes fixed to the surrounding bone, it prevents sound waves from reaching the inner ear fluids and hearing is impaired."
