It depends on what you mean by "cover". Yes, you could certainly go from one end to the other and hit all the major cities, you just wouldn't have time to see very much. I spent 5 weeks traveling mostly by bullet train, and I only saw a small fraction of the things I would like to see. Japan is very densely packed with fascinating and worthwhile tourist sites, and it would be better to select a moderately-paced itinerary and see things at a leisurely pace. You'll learn more and appreciate more. Enjoy it, and maybe you'll be lucky to go back again.

its possible in the short term (2-3 weeks) but not recommended because when u eventually eat a regular amount ur body wont be able to cope with it properly and u may regain weight anyway when u lose say 5lbs a week some of it is just water uve only 30 lbs to lose so i doubt if ur body would allow u lose it in 5-6 weeks 1-2 hours in the gym is great so keep that up and that will deffo help with the weight loss but to be honest the very most u should aim to lose is 3 lbs a week...theres truth to the notion that the slower it comes off the longer it stays off! 1200 cals is a bit low for all the exercise eat healthily and along with the gym itll drop off u but do it sensibly congrats on the baby and best of luck with the weight loss!

is a useful link. Input Sapporo and Kagoshima as Starting Point and Destination, and uncheck airline to get a price total and time total for the length of the train lines.

It may be that you'd have more fun just picking a few nice spots and staying there for awhile rather than trying to be too ambitious with your traveling by train, but it really depends on your goals. Anyway, maybe this helps a bit. Other folks have given you some good links.

PS Oops ...I see Jeff already mentioned this link...anyway, it's a good one.

I think you should pick the areas that you want to see the most and plan accordingly.....It really does depend on whether or not you like to rush from place to place or stay a few days in each place to get a feel of it.

With such a limited amount of time, personally, I wouldn't want traveling around too much to eat up all my time, and make it so I can't enjoy myself and go with the flow. But to each his own.....
