its better than what my parents called them... when I was little, it was a singee and a ****... I was mortifiably embarrassed in grade school when I stood up and announced this in front of my fellow 3rd graders.. I was laughed out of the room.. I would appreciate it if parents taught the proper terms, or just politely used "privates".. that is a good thing..

It all depends on the social norms of the situation.
If I am close friends with the person and I am not in a formal setting then I have no problem with it.
If I am a complete stranger to the person, I may feel a little uneasy about it.
If I am in a formal setting (such as a fine restaurant) I would generally avoid the subject - and would feel a little uneasy if it was brought up.

Having an adult refer to their genitals as "privates" is often better than having them unexpectedly make them public.

No.
It bothers me when people are so anally retentive they worry about how OTHER people refer to the PRIVATE parts of their own body.

Yes. They really ought call them words like woo-woo and pee-pee. I'm kidding, of course. People who call them privates are a different generation.
