ever heard it without one? obviously not. will sound like a rod knock.

It's called the harmonic balancer. The crankshaft vibrates or "pings" when the fuel iar mix explodes and forces the piston down to turn the crankshaft.

This vibration robs the engine of horsepower and is controlled by the front crankshaft "pulley" on newer cars or the crankshaft hamonic balancer on older cars. You use the timing mark on this pulley or balancer to set the mechanical timing on any car.

There are high performance harmonic balancers that claim to add 15 horsepower to the engine over the stock junk. The proof is in the performance at 8,000 to 19,000 RPM's.
