If you are traveling to the USVI directly from the U.S. mainland, Puerto Rico, Alaska or Hawaii, technically you only need your license or proof of citizenship. However, the smart post 9/11 traveler will always carry a passport because it serves both purposes.
As a frequent traveler to the USVI, I know how easy it is to travel to other islands, such as the British VI, and for that you absolutely need your passport to gain reentry.
The U.S. Virgin Islands require no marriage blood tests. American couples need only fill out a two-page form, pay a $50 license fee, and observe an eight-day posting period. It can be done through a local wedding planner, thus eliminating an on-island waiting period.
I suggest checking with a well-known organization such as:

to handle your arrangements so that your wedding goes off without a hitch! (pun intended)
The USVI is a wonderful place to visit. You are most fortunate to get married there.
Best wishes.
Oh, here's one more site to check out:

If you are going to the US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John) you will not need a passport. If you want to visit the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and others) then you WILL need a passport. I recommend you get one, as day trips to places like the baths are wonderful, but not possible if you don't have a passport any more.
If you keep yourselves to the US VIrgins, you could be bored over a month. And Virgin Gorda is just beautiful (as are many others)

First answerer is correct. See websites below to see the difference between the U.S. Virgin islands and the British Virgin islands. and, of course, if you get married in the unote States, your marriage will be valid in the Virgin Islands. See first website for passport info in case you decide to go to the British Virgin islands.

As long as you go to a US virgin island you wont need a passport. You will need one if you plan to visit a British virgin island.

to be safe, I'd visit the post office's website and look there. I provided a link below. The rules have changed at the beginning of this year.
Congratulations by the way.
