Many managers or businessmen tell that they are very busy and cannot take more than two or three days off without coursing problems in the usual run of their work. I think it depend of the style of management: many are afraid of sharing their work or responsibility with others, and carry all the burden themselves. But practice proves its inefficiency: a good manager should know how to organize the work of his team, should teach and help his people, and if he can provide the good run of his business for a comparatively long period without his presence - he's a good manager.

Managers who are good LEADER have no trouble taking a few weeks off and knowing everything will be good.

Why, because they trained their people, empowered them,
developed them and so forth.

A micro manager who constantly looks over everyones shoulders and dreads delegating or having anyone know more than him can't do this.

I agree with you completely. Hire capable people. Train them well. Give them the opportunity to demonstrate their own leadership abilities. And then trust them to do so. And reward them appropriately when they do. Do those things and an extended holiday should not be a problem. Besides, where can you go that you can't pick up a phone to call the business once or twice a day just to check on things or to deal with an emergency?

Many managers have a lack of confidence. Either no confidence in their employees or in themselves. They're either afraid the business won't do well without them, or afraid it might do too well without them.
