Seems like everyone always looks up at the floor indicator so they can avoid eye contact. I wonder why...

Social convention.

But, yes, I do make conversation on an elevator, but you knew that I probably would be the one to do it, huh? :)

I think I can post this joke here:

An old woman is riding in an elevator in a very lavish New York City building when a young, beautiful woman gets into the elevator, smelling of expensive perfume. She turns to the old woman and says arrogantly, "Romance" by Ralph Lauren, $150 an ounce!"

Then another young and beautiful woman gets on the elevator, and also very arrogantly turns to the old woman saying, "Chanel No. 5, $200 an ounce!"

About three floors later, the old woman has reached her destination and is about to get off the elevator. Before she leaves, she looks both beautiful women in the eye, then bends over and farts and says, "Broccoli - 49 cents a pound"...

Yes, unfortunately not everyone is quick to start up conversations with strangers. If you feel like you may have missed out on getting to know a wonderful person, the next time it happens make sure you say something. Just mustering up that small bit of courage could be the difference between meeting someone incredible or not.

I was told to focus on something to prevent motion sickness. So, the floor indictor it is. On a slow elevator, I'll usually start a conversation. I alway make eye contact.

Very interesting. But have you ever gone into a GLASS ELEVATOR? Trust me - you are looking out the window , the people around you AND qucikly checking the number system is going up or down.

You want conversation - go to a GLASS ELEVATOR!!!
(big hotels have this and conversation can happen)

perhaps they are hiding something. I always look into the eyes of the person i'm speaking to, when at all possible. it reveals alot about the person and whether or not you want to continue the conversation, or keep an especially close on them.....folks are too jumpy these days, gotta keep your eyes and your ears open....

I avoid eye contact at all costs. Especially with people in close quarters.

i don't talk to people i just cut silent but deadly farts and then leave so everyone else gets stuck in there with them. HAHAHAHA!!! you know this is something weird i've noticed it seems like in the states it's normal to start randomly chatting to people in an elevator but in other countries it isn't. when i wasa kid in the uk i never had anybody start talkin to me it's sort of rude or like you're imposing or nosey or something.
