Ah, the cameo appearance. What do I mean? A cameo is one where a player who has long-standing ties with one organization suddenly appears with another organization for a brief time (Michael Jordan with the Washington Wizards, Joe Montana with the Kansas City Chiefs, Pete Rose with the Montreal Expos and so on). I challenge all you hockey fans to come up with the most bizarre cameo a player has made in the NHL.
My nominee: Luc Robitaille, who is more familiar for his service with the Los Angeles Kings. However, Lucky Luc has made three cameos: a season (more like a half-season due to the lockout in 1994-95) with the Pittsburgh Penguins (and a memorable appearance in "Sudden Death"), two seasons as Mark Messier's left wing on the New York Rangers, and another two seasons spend in Motown with the Detroit Red Wings. Those cameos were the meat in the service sandwich Robitaille made with three separate stints wearing purple and gold (black and silver, black and purple, etc.). Enjoy!

Bertuzzi on the Wings this past season. Gretzky in St. Louis was also really odd.
However, a really bizaare cameo came in the former IHL (International Hockey League for those not old enough to remember) when Gordie Howe came in for 40 seconds with the Detroit Vipers. This was also the same team that brought in the Hansen brothers (remember them from Slap Shot) and announced them as part of the line-up (and after the nation anthem, they proceeded to beat up the ref).

Ed Giacomin was never traded!
The New York Rangers waived him and then released him.
The Detroit Red Wings, who were a pretty sad bunch at the time, signed him from the waiver wire.
Now, my nominee was already mentioned. Bobby Orr as a Black Hawk. Sure, Boston chose not to sign him, and Wirtzyboy gave him a cool $750K. But Orr was, and always will be a Bruin.
Imagine if you will, Maurice Richard suiting up for the Leafs. Sacreligious!

Well, the Rangers are cameo central. Even their 94 squad was largely driven by short timers.
Overall, guys like B. Geoffrion, P. Esposito, B. Carpenter, M. Dionne, T. Kerr, K. Lowe, G. Anderson, S. Larmer, J. Cirella, B. Driver, W. Gretzky, B. Holik, B. Shanahan have been peppered throughout team history.
Each spent a couple of years (give or take) with the organization towards the end or latter half of their careers with varying degrees of success...or failure.
I'd include Michel Petit, but his whole career seemed like one cameo after another.

Wayne Gretzky in St. Louis?
If you want a player who spent his entire career on one team and went somewhere else for a year or 2, Eddie Giacomin, Rangers fans were so pissed off after Eddie got traded, the only time Rangers fans rooted against their Rangers was when Eddie returned to MSG as a Red Wing. I think that it pretty bizarre.
Mark Messier going to Vancouver was weird, he came back to New York though, and Brian Leetch going to Toronto and then Boston was weird too, I was at Leetch's return to MSG and the fan support was great.

Guy LaFleur. He made a comeback with the Rangers then returned to Quebec for two seasons with the Nordiques. He was never the same player he was with the Canadiens and he just looks out of place with any other sweater than a Habs sweater. What is a Hab anyway?

Ryan Smyth going to Islanders for a month. Not the biggest one. Gretzky to St. Louis. Linden to every where. Niedermayer to Ducks. A past possibility was when Joe Sakic signed an offer sheet to go to Rangers. Now he is going to be with that team forever. I think the biggest one was Niedermayer though. I thought he would stay with NJ forever.

Was there anything stranger than Guy Lafleur skating around in a New York Rangers uniform? Unsettling. Well, anybody in a Rangers jersey is unsettling but poor Guy.
The 20 games that Paul Coffey spent in a Hartford Whalers jersey was quite odd, too.

How about Bobby Hull as a Hartford Whaler? In fact, he played with Gordie Howe for a short period of time in 1980.
That was really strange.

Well you can't blame Luc for wanting a SC. He sure the heck wasn't going to get one while on the Kings.

Well, Ray Bourque's two year stint in Colorado wasn't too bizarre like your asking for, but the Ave's retiring his number after 128 games played, including playoffs, to me is bizarre. I know he was a great player, but.......
