The river was probably the Connecticut River which runs almost the length of New England and was very important as a means of transportation. In the 1600's there wasn't much settlement far inland so my guess would be Connecticut also, where the mouth of the river is..

my guess would be Connecticut . Sorry, I don't have any proof on that one. I know Mass. was settled on it's coast and Rhode Island is on a bay of water. Maine was part of Mass. in the colonial times. New Hampshire and Vermont are almost landlocked except for a small stretch of coast.

The one that I can think of is the "Jamestown" colony on the Delaware river, right on the edge.
The other is the "Roanoke" colony but, I don't know the river. I would guess you looking for the "Jamestown" colony.
