If I have my headlights on and I touch my turn signal, my tailights shortout (breaklights still work) and they stay off. If I only have my parking lights on it doesn't happen. I have a friend with the same make and year and hers are doing the same thing. Any help would be appreciated as I am out of warrenty.

Start with the bulbs. They can, on occasion, create a short across the filament wires when the filament burns out. Both front and rear signal lights.(Much like a light bulb on a string of Christmas lights which is what that particular bulb is supposed to do.)

Look for any damage to the bulb sockets and the wires connected to the bulbs. The insulation on one wire that has worn through and is touching the body of the car will create a short when power goes to that wire.

If this fails to produce any results, I'd take it to a shop that only handles electrical repairs and tell them exactly what is happening and what you have tried to correct the problem. And tell them if any electrical work has ever been done to the car like a stereo installation.

They will probably remove the steering wheel and inspect the turn signal "switch" if all of the wiring is sound up to this point.

Good Luck!

I am not a Hyundai expert, but the problem sounds like a bad ground.

Lights are fairly simple, in most cases you have a hot wire to power the light and then it goes straight to a ground wire. The ground wire is normally green and at the tail lights, and elsewhere, it is usually connected to the body of the car with a spade terminal on the end of a wire. The terminal is attached to the body of the car with a screw or a stud and nut.

Check the ground wires to the tail lights and headlights. Hope this helps.

Its better if you could take it to the nearest authorised dealer. Its only a very minor problem which could be corrected in a few minutes by the mechanic.
