to me with the guaranteed contracts, the teams couldn't do anything about it. Players are professionals, they are business men. I doubt it would be like high school or college where they would be ostracized. There must be several MLB players who are gay. They should just come out and live their lives openly and honestly.

I guess my question is then, why don't they come out?

There are undoubtedly gay players in MLB right now. The U.S. Census strongly suggests that there are, anyway, if you follow the percentages. I'd have no problem with them coming out of the closet. I don't think they would be officially cut, but gosh, that'd be tough to keep going everyday. Professional sports are cruel and unforgiving. Handing the opposition a weapon like that? The poor guy would hear insults at each game, not to mention prejudiced fans. Simply put: there's a reason there aren't any openly gay, active athletes.

It would take a lot of courage on the part of the player, and it would probably have to be a superstar to break the ice and be the first out.

But released? Unless it was some benchwarmer not hitting his weight, that would be dicy, not to mention a tremendously stupid kneejerk reaction. Yeah, some would care, others would be paranoid, but (a) it (releasing for homosexuality) would certainly lead to a lawsuit and (b) some people in the front office probably know at least a few (their own team or elsewhere) anyway.

Colorado had a difficult time releasing Denny Neagle and voiding his contract (the Rox finally managed to buy out the last year of his deal), and he had solicitation and drunken driving against him -- actual crimes, albeit ones to which most people can somewhat relate even while frowning upon (getting a little action and bending the ol' elbow). Now, contracts can contain "do don't these specified stupid things" clauses, but I cannot imagine "don't be gay" would ever fly under legal scrutiny, even in these dark times. So; the player could be released, but there'd have to be some defensible pretense for it, and honestly I don't see it (the release) happening. Those who cannot deal with it can simply leave; many people would shrug and move on. There's still a long way to go but it isn't that paralytically stigmatized today.

they wouldn't be cut, but the would be ostracized by a few, maybe hit by some pitchers that knew or just simply ridiculed, you never want to give your enemy ammo to use on you. a better question is why would they come out? you think most gay people care if the entire world knows they are gay? no, only publicity whores like Rosie O'Donnell

Not at all.

MLB is very fair about things like this.

Look at all the players who took steroids. They are all still playing.
