It sounds like you have anxiety, or a paranoid fear or insecurity about your intellect.

If you were truly afflicted with mental retardation, you wouldn't be able to write that question, comprehend it and have the capability to be worrying about it.

If you can't stop worrying about it, just see your doctor. Talk to people who know you, contact a psychologist. But for now, I would say from an objective point that you surely are fine, and try to ease your mind.

Getting an erection is both a physical and emotional process. Physically your testosterone level must be normal, the blood supply to your penis must be unimpeded (no blocked blood vessels) and you must have sensation in your penis. If it is physical your doctor may be able to help you . Emotionally the anticipation and experience of sex should "turn you on". This starts the hormonal process necessary to have an erection. Note that when a man takes an erectile dysfunction medication such as Cealis or Viagra he still will not get an erection if he is not psychologically turned on. So it is a thought process as well as a physical experience. The fact that you can get an erection while lying in bed makes a physical problem less likely. All the plumbing seems to be working ok. This means it could be emotional. You should try and relax when you are about to have sex with your girlfriend. When you are anxious, what happened to you is not all that unusual. It is call "performance anxiety". Remember both of you want it to happen, but if you have not had any experience before this what happened to you is not the end of anything. If first you don't succeed try again!

At 23 years old, you probably are not mentally disabled or, if you are, it is likely to be mild since you have not been diagnosed. What made you even think that you have "mental retardation"? Are you having trouble reading (i.e. reversing or inverting letters and/ or numbers?) Because if so, you might have an undiagnosed learning disorder or, you could have an underlying illness or medical condition (i.e. does Alzheimer's run in your family? Maybe a clot in the brain or some other such). If you are really concerned, talk to your family doctor or general practitioner. He or she can order tests or point you in the right direction for testing, information and assistance if necessary. Good luck, but I think you may be worried over nothing.

Well fist off, you cannot determine your own problem. I do not know what you are stressing about. I doubt your are suffering from retardation or you wouldn't be posting your situation on a message board. You may have issues that bother you, but I highly doubt they have anything related to retardation.

As far as what is wrong with you, it is not something that others can say. That is for you to decide. Perhaps you are just going through a phase that you are unaware of or one that you are unfamiliar with. We all have times that we lack the knowledge of where we are or what is happening to us.
Hang in there. You'll be OK.

It is unlikely that you are retarded if you wrote that question yourself. What makes you think you have mental retardation? Did you go to school and graduate from high school? Can you live independently and manage your money? Can you hold a job? You may have some emotional or mental issues. Talk to your doctor and see a therapist to deal with your questions.

Sounds 2 me whats wrong would b Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Poss. Obsesive Compulsive Disorder. Combo of both. Sum depressed people also often convience themselves that they have an underlying mental problem.

Sumtimes we invent things 2 worry about so we arn't worring so much about the things that effect us most directly.

If you were mentally retarded, you would certainly know by now...or not, depending on the level of retardation. Don't worry. You're not.

well the fact that you are coherent enough to pose this question suggests to me that you don't have retardation. have u been on drugs or something? sometimes that may delay your mental reactions,.
