Operation? Who gave you that advise? Okay, your sciatic nerve runs down from your SI joint- which is the joint in your pelvis bone and there is one on both sides of your pelvis--in that canal is you sacroiliac nerve and it runs all the way down your leg into your toes. When mine gets irritated- I can't drive because it's my right leg and the pain starts throbbing in my foot so I can't push the peddle.

Therapy-----chiropractors help- they use a TEMS unit which is a nerve impulse machine which stimulates the nerve and relaxes it--going in a pool and just hanging on a raft so your body's weight pulls your spine down--it relieves the pressure and then there's actual injection....that's what I am at--and your solution is based on how bad your problem is ----mine I let go too long and now I'm on steroid/anti-inflammatory injections with lidocaine which totally numbs it and leaves it feeling great for a very long time..................by the way.....you should not be lifting, pushing, or pulling anything heavy with this type of problem--it will just irritate the nerve more and you may land up in bed for a couple of days............been there tooo hope you feel better soon........pick your poison from above.

I don't think there's much help when the sciatic nerve is the problem. I've had two back surgeries and a right hip replacement and my sciatic nerve problem is now worse than ever and my spinal surgeon says there's nothing more that can be done. And yes, I believe you saying it's 63 on a scale of 1 to 10! I have it and I agree with you!

Sciatica - try hanging upside down on a bar for a minute - this un-pinches the nerves that are inflammed if the Sciatica is due to a pinched nerve! Heat packs on the lower back also help as does massage - also get a Doctors opinion as to why you have Sciatica - could be anything from a pinched nerve to a bad hip.

There are several things you can do that may help you avoid surgery. First, if you are carrying any extra weight, lose it. Second, there are some very good exercises that will strengthen your abdominal muscles and help take the pressure off your back. Check out this website: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?Thread_ID=17.
And when the pain is the worst, you can lie on the floor with pillows under your lower legs so that it's like you are sitting in a chair but lying down.

Good luck!

Sit in a chair with your knees spread apart and bend down between them as far as you can trying to touch the floor with your head.

hold to the count of ten slowly then come back up and rest 30 seconds. Do this ten times every day. you will get a little sore at first but after about a week you should start to feel some relief.

Also lay on your back and grab a hold of the bottom of the couch and have someone pull on both legs and hold to the count of ten then rest and do that ten times also.

You have to keep this up every day with out fail and you should start feeling better after a week. Let me know how it works out for you.

Have you tried taking METHYL SULFONYL METHANE (msm for short)?

You have to take anywhere from 4000mg to 6000mg (Valerie sax ion and health suggest maybe even taking more than that per you can't over dose on this natural supplement per it's found in your body already but depletes the older you get).

Start slow, maybe taking 2000mg to start and slowly increasing the dosage (also, don't take it past 2:00 in the afternoon or you'll get no sleep).

Some studies have had there participants taking between 24,000 to 30,000 mg a day (no it's not a typo).

Just taking 500 or 1000mg won't work to help the pain (you'll experience a slight difference but not enough to bring relief).

Do your own research - I put a link below to get you started.

My mother had syatica and was bed ridden for 6 weeks (it was really severe). I had to help take care of her and we put her on a lot of supplements such as condrointin, msm, and others (also, lots of prayer was given up).

I believe my mother would not have suffered as much or as long, if I had known about the increased amounts of MSM. I hope that this information helps you...

Don't just take my words - do the research, run it past your doctor - take the two resources (your doc and research) and in the end make your own decisions about your own health.

It works - Good Luck...

p.s. I do not work for the company below, nor do I receive incentive...this link is just here to help you start off your research... God Bless...

There are plenty of conservative therapies to try before you even consider surgery. You should also have an MRI to determine where the pain originates to make sure that indeed your pain is due to pressure on the sciatic nerve. Other therapies to try are chiropractic, accupuncture, PHYSICAL THERAPY, a brace, steroid injections, and therapeutic massage. There are others, ask your doctor.

I am sure you shouldn't need a surgery at all. Four things you should start researching:

1) Osteopath
2) Homeopath
3) Ayurveda (Indian medicine)
4) Aromatherapy + Chinese massage

I've heard people getting cured with all four.
