I live in Iowa, by the way. As I was driving I noticed a lot of flags at half staff today. Does anyone know why?

Maybe carryover from...

Governor calls for flags to be flown at half staff to honor Ft. Dodge soldier
August 10, 2007 -- (Des Moines) Iowa Governor Chet Culver ordered that all flags in the state be flown at half staff on Monday, August 13th 2007, from 8 a.m. (CST) until sunset in honor of Marine Sgt. Jon Bonnell, Jr., 22, of Ft. Dodge who died on August 6th, 2007, while serving in Iraq.

The Governor's directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. Flags will be at half staff on the state Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

UPDATE

Sorry, found this.

August 14, 2007 (AP)--Governor Culver has ordered all flags in the state be flown at half staff today to honor an Iowan missing in action since after his helicopter was shot down in Laos during the Vietnam War in 1968.

The remains of Chief Warrant Officer Dennis Hamilton of Barnes City and four other soldiers were recently recovered.

The group remains are being buried today in Arlington National Cemetery.

Under Culver's order, flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset.

This is the second day flags in Iowa have flown at half-staff. They were lowered yesterday to honor 22-year-old Marine Sergeant Jon Bonnell Junior. The Fort Dodge native died in an explosion last week in Iraq.

A flag can purely be 0.5-staffed by proclamation from the President or Governor. I advise that it incredibly is at 0.5-team on the instant because of the loss of life of a former First woman. the prevalent length for flying flags at 0.5-team are 30 days for a President and 10 days for a vice chairman. thus, as not something has been reported (so a techniques as my understanding), the flag must be at usual top the next day. Governors can now order the flag to be flown at 0.5-team for a fallen militia workers of that state. in spite of the shown fact that, a civilian, under the US Flag Code, can not confirm no count if nor to not fly a flag at 0.5-team. this could be a governor/presidential staggering purely. i'm an excellent supporter of the Flag Code (you would be shocked what's forbidden under it--did you recognize that flag muffins, napkins, shirts, etc. at the instant are not allowed under the code?), because it incredibly is the emblem of u.s. that many individuals provide their existence for. I advise checking it out.

There are 51 people that can order the US Flag to Half Staff, each states Governor (in his/her own state) and The President.

Looks as if this was done the right way, even if there was carryover.
