Okay, what is the question? I have the category you want to discuss.....

Did they use branding irons in the 1800's....

the answer is yes.

What were they for?

They marked the cattle's skin by burning through the hair and leaving a scar on the hide showing to which ranch the cattle belonged.

Did it hurt?

Hold a match to your skin and let me know. (leave it there long enough to make a scar.)

What did they look like?

Just about any design you can think of... each one had to be unique to distinguish it from the other ranches.

Were they forged?

Sure they were.... If you lived next to the "S" ranch, why not make your brand "-S-" so any of them "S" cattle that wondered over on your land all you had to do was add "- -" and they was yours.

g-day!
