Roxie - Your answer shows your lack of knowledge in the subject. No one is forcing the people to go to a bar or to go to a restaraunt they choose too.

yes i agree give us a break, non-smokers say it's harmful 2 them, but whats more harmful a little smoke or cars, semi's, factory's? i smoke and i think it's ok in restrauants, but not bars, 99% of the people that go into bars smoke, and putting smoking bans on bars are gonna 1. promote more drunk driving bc people who live on the borders of non smoking states are gonna jump border 2 drink and how are they gonna get back? drive! and 2. some will just stay home. so either way bars are gonna lose buissness. i have a friend that owns a small bar in illionos, and come jan how long do u think his bar will last? ess when he'll get fined $2,500 for every person that smokers there and we'll get a $250 fine. and no smoking in work places, thats another big no if i could not smoking durning break i'd end up killing so of the customers bc they can just be down right mean, and i'd need my stress reliver. and just 1 more thing think of this smoking outside + every cold wheather = MORE SICK PEOPLE!!!!! which will = more hospital bills and i can barley pay my bills now if i get sick can i sue the government? NO! bc i'd lose bc i smoke and they'd say it was my chose, well it's not my chose 2 smoke outside, so regardless of the smoking ban i'm gonna smoke where it's warm...even if it's the bathroom, it's our chose so just leave us the hell alone and go deal with some bigger problem, like homeless kids!

I'm an ex-smoker and I fully support the rights of smokers. I believe it would be fine to have smoking facilities and non-smoking facilities as in the case of restaurants and bars. It's ridiculous to ban entire cities.
I believe many times smoking is used as just another political tool to create more income for the government to waste.

What angers me is this. I am at a public park, have been sitting quietly for an hour or so, reading my book and having a smoke. You then come up, butt your blanket next to me and start coughing and telling me I am killing you with my cancer stick.
I am outside, I placed myself away from the crowd and then comes Maude.
Bars should not be off limits unless the owner says it should be. Restr. I am less passionate about. I just cannot wait for the ban to go to my property and my car.

I have always been a bit pissed off that even before smoking bans a person could open business (restaurant) and make it a non-smoking restaurant, but we can not open a business that is for smokers only (restaurant or bar). You can clearly post on the door that it is a smoking facility and non-smokers would not have to enter. Most establishments already have the right to refuse service to anyone, so why can't we refuse to serve those that bit*h about our smoking.
Now in California, they have passed to tobacco tax increases, the first was $0.25 per pack, that went to doctors and hospitals about a year later it was another $0.50 per pack that is supposed to go to anti smoking education. I view these taxes as being illegal because the are punitive taxes meant to punish smokers.
Let me put it another way, if abortion is a womans right to choose because it is her body, why isn't it our right to choose, it is our bodies. True our second hand smoke MAY kill people but abortion DEFINATELY kills someone.

I was just watching the South Park episode of tolerance. The kids were taken to this museum of tolerance where they were told how evil it is to be intolerant and to accept others. Yet, when they came outside the same people who preach tolerance insulted a guy who was smoking outside. It seems society hasn't yet learn to accept smokers, is okay to be fat but you can't smoke.

How about give the Non-Smokers a break? .....Seriously, Being a former smoker I never really realized how horrible it is for the Non-Smoker ... But have you ever smelled a smoker? ( When you were not a smoker?) Smells Bad! is it fair that I have to breath in toxic fumes that I don't want to have in my body, Is it fair that your forcing me to breath in toxins? do I want to give you control to kill me ? No Way! Go the 20 ft or whatever it may be away from the general public and be happy that they still are here for you to smoke and that the taxes are not so high that you can't afford to kill yourself with them and I'll be happy I stopped smoking and that you can't make the decision for me to me inhale the toxic fumes anymore !.
AND I do think that smokers have a right to smoke (Just not in the general public areas) and there should be places that are "Smoking bars and Restaurants" I just won't go to them simple as that.
Yes I live in IL and we have high tax as well but you can still afford to smoke since you choose to do so .

No! I don't want lung cancer just because of your disgusting habit. I went to a bowling alley and there were people smoking next to my friends and I in the next lane. I and two of my friends had sore throats for a week and my other friend got bronchitis and almost had an asthma attack. Not to mention all of my clothes smelled gross and my eyes were teary. I mean I do not want to be subjected to that in a public place just because you need your cig. Would you want an innocent person who does not choose to smoke to die or lung cancer from second hand smoke just because you are addicted to cigarettes? I should be allowed to go to a restaurant, bowling alley, bar or any other place without breathing in your gross, smelly, toxic fumes.

I think smoking should be banned in public areas like resturants. I think you should be allowed to smoke....it's your body even if I don't agree with that lifestyle. The smoking ban is important to people who value their health. I have asthma, I am type 1 diabetic, and I am a 2 sport athlete. i don't want to be around that secondhand smoke. It's not fair that you should endanger other people by smoking in public places. I value my health, and my body, i want to keep it pure from carcinogens. I'm not one of those people who go around calling cigarettes cancer-sticks, I just think smokers should be more considerate to the non-smoking public. That's not bad

I hadn't heard of any TOTAL bans of smoking (in the way that illegal drugs are banned), only bans against smoking in public places. As for why people support these? Because *your* smoke affects *our* health. Anyone with asthma, or allergies, is put in actual danger by your smoking.
There's an old saying, "Your rights end where my nose begins." Smoking bans fit that perfectly. Smoke in your car. Smoke in your house. But keep it out of public spaces.

I think it should be the owner of a business to decide if people can smoke in the business or not. If the government wants to tell me that i cannot allow any one to smoke in my store, then they can pay all the overhead that i have to pay.
