The area is a dead zone and is sealed with guards. You can obtain permission and there is a tour company that goes as far as Pripyat and no closer. Radiation went in soil and plants, it is not retained by asphalt, which makes rides through this area possible. You might have problems with the dosimeter guys, who man the checkpoints. They are experts, and if they find radiation on you vehicle, they gave it a chemical shower.
Radiation will stay in the Chernobyl area for the next 48,000 years, but humans may begin repopulating the area in about 600 years, give or take three centuries. The experts predict that, by then, the most dangerous elements will have disappeared or been sufficiently diluted into the rest of the world's air, soil and water.
Sadly the anniversary of twenty years will be on April 26th

There was a very good article in Wired on 4/11/11 that stated that some-to-many of the animals and plant life that is thriving in Chernobyl are endangered species that have been given a safe haven from us (humans). It is interesting to think what would happen if we made Chernobyl a national wildlife reserve where no humans were allowed without a special permit even after it became safe to inhabit by humans once again. It is even more interesting to think what would thrive if we had specific spots in different climates and areas of the world where humans were prohibited in order to allow the plant and animal life in those areas to thrive unfettered.

I say it should be ready in 70 to 170 years. I say this because by then it will be the year 2186.

600 years. Absolutely amazing. And none of us will be here to witness it. That makes me sad that I might miss history in the making.
