He was always seen with a cigarette and liquor/beer. I know this was to promote the image of an outlaw journalist, but how many cigarettes and liquor did he actually take in?

My fiance's friend once roomed with Hunter S Thompson and when the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas came out the friend said that Johnny Depp's portrayal was brilliant and dead on. Apparently, Hunter S Thompson was not sober if he could help it and having something to smoke close by was par for the course. How much that totals to minute by minute is anyone's guess. But I know that most people have a hard time smoking two packs a day so let's say that he smoked about two packs of cigarettes a day, plus some pot, plus drank frequently . . . and then took acid, ;shrooms, etc. on top of all of that.

I don't know exact numbers, but somewhere in the realm of A GOOD BIT. Fear and Loathing was a lovely roller coaster of an acid trip.
