yes, windows firewall comes with XP, you just need to turn it on.

I would also advise using a good antivirus... AVG, Avast! and AntiVir are all very good and very free :)

Windows XP comes with a firewall but it isn't all that great. It really gives you no control of what runs in windows and there are some processes you might want to stop. Two good firewalls to download are Zonealarm free and Comodo free. They tell you when new programs are running and if they are accessing the internet. You get to choose which programs can and can't access the internet. That's the main thing you want in a good firewall.

Yes, Windows XP comes with a "firewall". As some of the previous responders mention, that doesn't mean much. In fact, I don't trust any software filewalls that run under Windows.

For an effective firewall, you need a network appliance like a Linksys or Netgear router/firewall. They are much more effective.

Yes. Most suites also have both anti-virus and firewalls. If you decide to buy a firewall don't run windows and it at same time as it wastes resources being redundant. Some think that the more firewalls you have the better but if you have a high quality firewall it will protect what the lower quality firewall does and more so you dont need to waste resources having 2 guards for each port.

Rule #1: Always have a firewall running, even if it has to be the Windows Firewall.
Rule #2. Get a better firewall than the Windows Firewall. ZoneAlarm does a nice job, and it's free.

If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, you have a firewall. Windows XP service pack 2 comes with a Windows Firewall of its own. To check if you have SP2, right-click my computer and choose properties. The General tab of Computer propties will read Windows XP- Service Pack 2 if you have Sp2. To check your firewall settings, click Start> run, type firewall.cpl and press enter. You may turn it on if is off!!

To a point but you should use a program like ZoneAlarm as a firewall. The one that comes with Windows XP isn't very safe.

Windows XP firewall only protects incoming traffic. Outgoing traffic (like your login passwords, etc) is not protected.
So obviously, you need a more robust firewall.

i assume you ought to get added protection, yet to tell you the reality, no laptop will ever be incredibly, a hundred% risk-free. There are holes in each little thing, no remember what it ought to look like. -Pie
