They're used as a visual reference, so you know what frets you're on. Most guitars have them on the third, fifth, seventh, an ninth frets. Then there are two on the 12th fret, which is one octave up from an open string, then on the 15th (one octave up from the third), 17 (one octave up from the fifth), 19th (one octave up from the seventh), and 21st (one octave up from the ninth).
The guitars that have 24 frets have another two-dot set. (one octave up from the 12th)
They're called "inlays". Beginners, intermediate players, and expert players alike use them. I've been playing 10 years, and I still use them every day!

Marker dots or fret dots are on the face or edge of the fretboard and are usually placed at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 (double dot to indicate the octave), 15, 17, 19 (and 21 on necks that have at least 22 frets).

Position markers, I think. There was a guitar player around the 80's and 90's named Tony Macalpine- I think that was his name-he had a custom model made for him with no markers. Then theres Carlos Santana. The first model of guitar made for him by Paul Reed Smith had position markers that were flying birds-I don't know if anyone remembers that. The double markers-two dots, on most guitars-represent an octave (twelve frets).

they are to show you which fret is which, so you dont have to count. they are on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th, and 21st. basically, you can say the 8th fret is after the 3rd dot, you only have to count to 3, not 8. theyre called fret markers or inlays usually.

they show you where to put your fingers. plus they help cuz if you make somethin cool up on the guitar and have trouble remembering what fret it started on, you can use them as markers to make it easy to remember. all they are is basically markers. i don't know what they're called though.
dude i saw this one guitar that had little bats where the dots should be. it was so awesome. i really like vampires too so i was extra siked. i want one of those so bad.

They are not just for beginners btw...They are commonly called fret markers or fret inlays. There are not stickers either, they are abalone or pearl typically routed out of the fretboard in and then glued into place. Their purpose is to mark which fret they are( 3,5,7,12,15 etc...) but are mostly for decoration.

Not sure what they're called, but they're stickers that show you where to put your fingers for a chord. Beginners use them.

I believe, though I'm not positive, that they're called rosettes.
