What is the difference between a DVI and a VGA cable? I got both cables when I bought my computer screen for my XPS 410 Desktop. I have a 22" Dell E228WFP LCD Monitor. Which cord should I use to connect to the computer the DVI or VGA? Any help would be nice.

I only have two connectors in the back of my desktop that only fits the DVI cord. I have an extra adapter piece that converts into a VGA adapter. My graphics card is a 265MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS. So, from this info which should I use?

use the DVI if your video card has the interface for it. It is digital while the vga is an analog connection. Both are included as video cards aren't guaranteed to have DVI.

UPDATE:

if you only have an interface the uses DVI, by all means use the DVI connection with the monitor. The adapter would just convert you to a lower technology, which you really have no need to do

Absolutely the DVI if your graphic card has a DVI
(Digital Visual Interface ) output.
That way the signal go to LCD panel in digital form and you can feel a better visual experience.

VGA (Video Graphics Array) is a cable for analog signal transfer, that mean the digitized signal fom graphic card convert to analog before leave your PC and threw VGA cable reach your screen. That has as a result a loss of quality.

But your graphic card must have a DVI output to connect DVI cable.
Differences on DVI and VGA connectors are obvious beside the graphic card so you can tell if you have DVI. VGA connector has only 15 pins or holes.

DVI is the newer "better" one.
It is a digital interface VGA is an analog one.
MY suggestion, try them both and at different resolutions and refresh rates.
This is especially true if your a gamer because nobody can determine how your vision precieves things.
To complicte matters DVI has now been outdated by HDMI which is the NEW standard.

DVI (the white cable) is better. DVI does not go through multiple analog/digital rtanslations. VGA is good for backwards compatibility.
