I bought a lava lamp two days ago, and at that time it was working fine. But today, i turned on the lamp and waited for the "lava" to heat up and start floating. however, within 10 minutes, the "lava" part just detached from bottom of the lamp and the whole thing was like solid wax and not liquid. Is this normal or is there a problem?

Very common.
Just let it sit on for awhile and the paraffin wax will heat up. Can take up to an hour or more.
Do not try to put a higher wattage bulb in. You'll burn it.
