I want to go to Europe in 5 years and tour Spain, Italy, Greece, France, etc. but without a tour guide. How much is a good estimation of what it would cost for the whole trip, including HOSTEL (not HOTEL) stays, train/metro tickets, airfare, meals, shopping...etc.?? I'm basically looking for experience from anyone with experience on doing this Europe thing without any help from a tour guide--- I love doing things on my own!! Feel free to share amazing places to be sure to visit, your experiences, whatever!! Thanks!!

You are planing to travel in 2012?
It is already impossible to tell you how much you need this year.
Best thing is to look at packet prices, like the bus tours, because while they often cost a little more than you would spend traveling by yourself, the companies keep an eye out for prices and currency fluctuations.

For now I would advice you to plan to safe $2000 for the airfare and $200 per day for the stay, but keep track of the prices and so on.

An advice about experiences, read this section of this site.
The four questions I read today so far all did cover a part of traveling Europe and peoples experiences.
