When I changed my name to my husband's name, I took my birth certificate, my marriage certificate and my old social security card to the social security office and changed it. After I got the new card in the mail, I went to the DMV and changed it there. After that I went to my human resources office where I work and changed it there. Phone calls to most of my credit cards was all it took for them to be changed, only one required my marriage certificate. Nowhere did anyone ask me how long ago I got married... so I don't know that it mattered when changing your name. I live in California, so I can only speak for what happened here. Good luck!

Yeah I just changed my name a month ago and I had already been married seven months. All they want is the old SS card and your marriage certificate. They take your old SS card and send you a new one in the mail. It's really easy! Once you go they will give you a letter stating that you're going to receive a new card and you can take that to the DMV and get a new ID. All done!! Good Luck

As others have said, take your marriage license to the Social Security office. Also, you have to do the same thing at the DMV. or the Secretary of State. That will change your name for your drivers license.

You first need to see if you checked the box where you want to keep your name or his name and go to the Social security office first with your marriage licenses and have your name changed there first, wait 24 hours then go to the drivers licenses office and change it there. again you must have your marriage licenses for proof when you change your name at your job or bills you must send in your marriage license. (a copy)

You must bring the original marriage certificate to social security office, dept of motor vehicles, passport, your employer, your bank, credit card accounts, health insurance, etc. You would have to call each of these places to find out just what you have to do to change your name due to marriage.

I never heard of Social Security being able to do this. I think that suggestion is an error.
I had to petition the court to get my maiden name back, so I'm sure you'd have to petition the court to get your husband's name as your married name... just talk to the court clerk to make sure if that is correct.
