I'm a beginner on guitar, and I've been playing an acoustic for a few months. I'm really serious about it, and I'd like to buy a nice strat that will last me a while. I can't really afford an actual Fender Strat, but I've seen multitudes of various off-brand Strat-look-a-likes at local pawn shops. They're all pretty cheap, but I want to know what brands make the best non-Fender strats?

i have a squire, they're ok, you should get it set up by a guitar tech (most music stores have one) to get the best playability out of your guitar, just remember you get what you pay for, if you buy the cheapest one you can find your gonna get the cheapest sound

You've got good answers so far. The Squire would be my reccomendation. Consider this, though. You said you wanted to keep this guitar for a while so if you can save up a little and buy a low end American Strat or Tele, you'll be much happier over the long haul, and, you'll have something worth selling or trading when you get ready (and you will) to move up. My advice, buy only from a good music store with lots of tech support. Stay out of the pawn shops. Guitars may look very similar on the outside, but trust me, there's a world of difference underneath the surface. FYI, I'm currently playing a '52 reissue Tele I bought new for around $1200. You should find good used American Fenders starting at around $600. I play all genres of music and the Tele performs well for them all. Good luck and Keep Pickin'

Check out Vintage V6 full of quality hardware & a bargin not sure how easy to get in the USA as they are a UK guitar, I just brought one & it is excellent! Also the standard squier stratocasters are very good quality & value.

Yamaha makes a good guitar too. Just remember that a guitar is as good as its ability to play in tune.

Fender Squier is a cheaper brand,, that plays "Sweetly".
check it first before looking at others
