in a recent survey by Time magazine and Computer Shopper dell toshiba and apple ranked at the top of reliability and performance

the bottom 3 were HP(a bit of a surprise) emachines and Gateway

for the best blend of cost and because it sounds like you like pc's i'd look at either the dell inspiron series or the tishiba satelite series

Gateway was once at the top, even above Dell. They became (and still are) overpriced for what you get. Dell has always been at or near the top for a long time, so you can't go wrong there. It really all depends on what you want the PC for. If you want a top of the line gaming machine, get an Alienware. If you want somthing just for web surfing and a bit of home office stuff, get an HP. If you want something just for all- around basic performance, get a Dell. I personally build my own computers. I have 5 that are working right now, but the only one not built by me is a Dell. Gateway is Ok, but you can get the same thing for less $$$ with a Dell. Happy shopping!
Oh yeah, stay away from eMachines at all costs!!

Toshiba is overpriced and you pay for the name in a lot of cases in the better of their computers. Dell is running strong in performance and price. I recently quoted a 17" laptop for a friend and the only laptop rated better by Consumer Reports was a Mac for $1000 more. And the only difference between the Dell and the Mac was that the Mac monitor was rated Very Good and the Dell monitor was rated good. I just don't think it's worth $1000 for the Mac logo on a laptop. I wouldn't personally touch a Compaq, Gateway, HP, etc. In my humble opinion they are mostly junk machines. I'd recommend you take a good long look at the Dells. The laptop I quoted for a friend was an Inspiron 1720. I personally have and XPS 410. Both are very good manchines. Hope this helps.

whatever you do, dont get a dell, they suck. they always freeze up, they dont function well, they are over priced for what they give you. do yourself a favor, buy a compaq/hp. they have a good warranty, if anything happens to it, like it crashes and it wont fix, the company will help you fix. the compaq i have now has a built in system recovery, so if it does crash, all you have to do is turn on the power and tap f11 repeatedly and it wil take you to a screen and you can reset the systems factory defaults to just opened, it gets rid of everything thats wrong with it. it also lets you create backup disks, so if your computers hardrive gets fryed, all you have to do is buy a new one, install it, and run the recover disks, it installs all the operating system components. it is a very good buy, at best buy, a laptop is about 700, very much worth it. well, i guess it was on sale, but still, great buy

Gateway is considered second tier. emachines, its sister brand is considered third tier. For value for the dollar, get a Dell, HP Compaq or Toshiba. For price is no object, Alienware, voodoo, xps or falcoln northwest

I have a Gateway, bought it 2 yrs ago and haven't had a problem with it since. In fact I caught a virus once and called the customer help line and they walked me right thru it. So I give them a thumbs up big time.

I would go for Dell/HP over Gateway or Compaq -- you'll find the components (RAM) are more universal and easier to purchase than proprietary Gateway/Compaq

I have a Dell and love it, but we have had a few problems mostly because It came with McAfee Security and frankly they are just not good at keeping viruses, worms or trojans out so I got another security (cant seem to get rid of McAfee) and they work better (avast)

God Bless
