At my house we have a dog door, and just saw a story on the news about a cat burgular who went inside the dog door and stole a famlies possessions. What could my family do to prevent that from happening? (We can't take the dog door off. we need it.) PLEASE NO RUDE ANSWERS.

If you don't want to buy a new dog door, you can look into other security measures. You can buy a sensor flood light for the back yard so it goes on when someone or some animal is outside. You can buy a motion detector for the house, there are several on the market that won't detect under 80 lbs which is enough for even the largest dog to walk around and not set if off, but will go off if anyone over 80 lbs intrudes. You can aim the motion detector directly in the area of the dog door that way the people in your house can still walk around at night.
I have to say though, I like the idea of the dog door that is unlocked by the dog collar.
Have your mom do some research on the internet. It is important for the person who is concerned to learn the facts.
I wish you lots of security and safety.

I have the same concerns so i purchused a doggy door that i can lock from both the outside (im stiill not sure why) and a seperate lock inside, i use this when im not home. Now not knowing what type (size ) of dog u have u may need to move your doggy door next to or in actuall doors is the worst place to have them as thieves can reach in and open doors that way.
Petsmart is where i bought my lockable doorfrom

Actually you can get a motorized style of door that only opens with a special magnet on the dogs collar, it is made out of a plexiglass or other sturdy material and even has an off switch for nightime use, you can find it on the internet, but it will cost you some $$$.
Good luck!

You can put a lock of some sort from the inside of the house locking the dog door while not in use, especially at night.
Or, you can buy a new dog door that has a locking mechanism for it.
Good luck!

look at it logically- there's a reason she won't use the door- is there a particular time she won't use it? Like, after the lights furniture are out interior the kitchen? Is there something close to the doggie door that she could be afraid she will hit if she walks into? Has she had a foul adventure there?

There are dog doors where they are only opened by a sensor on the dog's collar. It's like a garage door opener almost. They are more expensive, but more secure.

There are dog door blockers. These are usually used at night so the dogs cannot go outside.

your dog door should have a security panel with it...if not...make one out of plywood...this is usually enough to deter any persons with ill intent
