use a hose to put down the tank, pull it up and measure how much of the hose is wet from the gasoline, my father does this cause he has a 75 Buick and the gage don't work

by the way the lighter might ignite the gas causing a fire

Much better to toss a match in. If the match goes out right away, your tank is full. If the vapours ignite and explode your vehicle, you were low on gas.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. What colour flowers do you think look good on the casket?

Seriously, no offense, but that could possibly be the stupidest thing to do in that particular situation!!! Instead, use a flashlight, or take another car if possible.

well, if gas was there, it would explode. the fumes r probably still there, in which case it would explode. i would use a flashlight. r if i knew i was outta gas, i would take another car, and bring gas home in a can.

Refiling the tank would be the least of your problems if you used that method to check.
