liberal once meant liberty, liberals are moving away from us.

libertarians believe in
The Minimum Possible Government
The Maximum Personal Freedom (that doesn't infringe on another's equal freedom)
No use of force in the pursuit of political or social ends
Free and Open markets

neo-liberals beliefs are much harder to define becasue they are not as principle based and riddled with exceptions. Typically done in the name of building better society they do things like:
Increasing government regulation
Increasing govenment subsidies
Redistribution of wealth
Intervention in foreign countries, just not iraq. "Peacekeeping" instead of the neo-cons "Nation Building" can include embargos, which libertarians would view the same as an invasion.
Markets are planned and negotiated by politicians, for example NAFTA.

The united states was largely libertarian until Woodrow Wilson, with the arguable exception of JFK.

On some issues the Libertarians are moving away from the socialist liberals but on issues such as abortion, gay marriage, legalization of all drugs and protecting our country by use of force, they seem to be stuck in the same bed as the liberals.

So no, it is NOT you.

Libertarianism has been pretty constant as a political ideology. I don't know about liberalism (except in the classical European sense which has been around for a long time) but I think it has been becoming perhaps slightly more socialist in America. Maybe it's just that they've had more success of late.

No--because,d espite the propaganda, liberals are generally NOT socialist.

Genuine libertarians are, in fact, shifting to supporting the Democrats more. The resion is simple. Often, libertarians tend to support Republicans because of their emphasis on minimizing government intrusion into economic affairs.

But genuine libertarians recognize tha tcivil liberties take priority--and the more the right-wing tries to undermine the cConstitution and the liberties our forefathers fought and died to give us, the less the true libertarian--or the loyial American--is going to support the neoconservatives.

If Howard Dean doesn't represent the 'increasingly socialist liberals' I'm not sure who or what does.

Regardless, libertarians are neither really liberal and they certainly aren't socialist. The good news is that real libertarians scare the crap out of both parties.

You mean the increasingly socialist Democrats. Many liberals are also moving away from them.

When have libertarians ever been close to socialists or liberals for that matter? Never.

They are staying where they always were...as the right increasingly wants to put religion in the government, god in schools, deny gays the right to marry, push our values into Iraq and force women to have babies and the left wants to create more social programs so they are not moving either way.

It's just you, because the Libertarian Party has always been extremely conservative. They sometimes look liberal because there's such a contrast with the liberal Republicans, and the liberal-conservative axis is not remotely near what the two parties claim it is.
