Junior hockey is NOT followed anywhere near as much as College Football in the USA.

Hell, the NHL isn't followed as much in Canada as College Football is in the USA.

The NCAA television contract for one year, is greater than the NHL's North American television contracts in the last 10 years.

The share of televisions tuned into NCAA football in the US is 15%. The share of televisions in Canada tuned to Major Junior Hockey...0.8% (The NHL does have a 17.3% share in Canada). According to a spokesperson at Rogers Cable, the number of Canadians watching US College Football is hundreds of thousands (the average television audience for a Canadian Junior Game is less than 50,000 - on par with the LPGA)

College Football is huge business in the United States (Go to Vegas on a Saturday morning!). Comparing Canada's love of junior hockey, or even the NHL is truly laughable.

Now, there is a week every December where Junior Hockey is king...................................

Not really. It's an issue of broadcasting: I suspect that college football gets a lot of TV time that probably dwarfs the little coverage that the junior leagues (especially Major Junior) get. The CHL has teams scattered all over, some in smaller towns like Medicine Hat, and there just isn't a big enough market to justify or make back the money they'd have to spend to air those games. Even the Vancouver Giants, who are in a fairly good market and have a pretty passionate following, air only the "big" games on a local access channel (Shaw channel 4).

That said, the junior leagues got more attention during the lockout year and actually gained more fans because of that. There was a lot of talk about how "these kids are the future NHLers" and that made a lot of people interested, especially because there was a complete lack of hockey elsewhere. It's gaining in popularity, but, no, it's definitely not as big as college football in the US. Cost (for the broadcasters) just makes it difficult for anyone who's not hardcore about major junior to follow it, and coverage for the lower-tier leagues (BCHL, for example) is non-existent.

No. Just because media coverage for college football is huge. I can watch more college football in Canada then I can Junior Hockey.
I can also watch the NFL draft (day event for cripes sakes) on TV but can only see the 1st round of the NHL.
Football is huge. Top junior hockey teams drawing 8 or 9 thousand can't touch the 100,000 plus of the NCAA.
College football is way up there, it is even fairly big in Canada to the extent that it might be bigger than Junior Hockey here.
Most people in Canada would not know the standings of CHL teams except for the region they live in....alot of them don't even know.

NCAA College Football is bigger in Canada than Junior Hockey.

All ths sports channels devote time to show highlights of the top 25 every weekend, College Hockey gets maybe 5 minutes

I think that's a fair comparison. I've seen 5x as many junior games as NHL games.

You'd think it would, seeing as how big hockey is in Canada.
